From the first pages

Carlos had a little box with a black-and-white pattern. It was just the right size for him: when he climbed in, only his head stuck out. Every morning he got into his box and barked once, which meant "Let's go!"
On rainy days, the box became a boat. Deniz lined up the cushions like waves, and Carlos rocked from side to side inside his box. Whoosh, whoosh, here come the waves!

Let’s talk as a family: “Why did Carlos go to his old box instead of the new bed? 2) Do you have something you love that you'd never give up, even when it's old?”

Explore together

The child notices that Carlos's joyful barking has scared a new child, and sees how Deniz tries to understand someone else's feelings by reading their behavior. Deniz then gently tries to invite a shy child to join the game.

The child colors scene 6 (the red ball rolling in the sand) or draws their own 'silent invitation': they draw and tell how they would invite someone to play without speaking. For the hidden object search, they find and point out the red ball and leash in scene 1, the empty bucket in scene 2, and the bucket, sandcastle, and bench in scene 9.

Talk together

1) How did Deniz notice that Arda was scared? 2) What do you do when you meet someone new? How would you like someone to invite you to play? Play the 'silent invitation' game together: one of you invites the other to play by gently rolling a ball without saying a word—then switch turns. Also, talk about how, when meeting a dog, you should ask the owner first and wait for the dog to sniff your hand.
