Mino had placed the picnic basket by the door. Inside were apples, bread and little sandwiches the family had made together. The yellow blanket was ready too. But one drop appeared on the window, then another. Soon the garden shone with rain.

‘Our picnic is over,’ Mino said, refusing to put the basket away. Dad said, ‘We cannot follow our outdoor plan right now. It makes sense to feel disappointed. But the lovely things in our basket are still here.’ Mino watched the rain and thought.

Mum suggested spreading the blanket in the living room. Mino hesitated, then had an idea. ‘Let us sit where we can see the window and listen to the rain!’ Everyone brought a cushion. The basket seemed ready for a completely new adventure.

Before eating, each person named a sound: drops on the glass, pattering on the roof, a distant bird. Mino imagined the garden plants drinking. ‘We are having our picnic inside, and they are having theirs outside!’ Everyone laughed. The rain felt different now.

Later the rain eased. The adults checked whether the garden was suitable for a picnic. Mino spread the blanket in a dry spot. Tiny drops sparkled on the leaves. This was different from the morning's plan, but they were discovering it together.

Carrying the empty basket home, Mino said, ‘We had two picnics today!’ Their plan had changed, but their time together had stayed special. They folded the blanket and talked about another outing. When a plan changes, what other idea would you like to try?
