That evening Mercan began telling the seaside story. “The kite was the best part,” the kitten said. A sibling preferred the sandcastle. Dad remembered a visiting gull. One day was becoming three different stories.

“But the kite was much nicer,” Mercan insisted. The sibling put a drawing away. Mum brought blank paper. “We can enjoy different things. Would everyone like to draw a memory?” she asked.

Mercan drew the curling kite string. The sibling made a tall castle doorway. Dad described the gull’s funny walk. Mum drew a leaf found on their picnic cloth. None of the pictures needed to correct another one.

They showed their drawings in turn. Mercan laughed at the gull’s walk, a detail the kitten had missed. The sibling remembered the kite landing once. Both smiled while telling how they had lifted it together.

They placed the sheets side by side to make one coast. The kite flew above, the castle stood on sand, and the gull visited the cloth. Mercan drew paths between them. Every memory had its own place in the story.

Before bedtime they looked at the page. “I remembered only one part,” Mercan said. “Together we can tell more,” the sibling replied. Tomorrow would bring another day, with different eyes finding different lovely details.
