One evening the family spread spare pieces of fabric on the table. They were making a quilt for reading together. Dad chose a big green piece. Mum chose flowers. In front of Pofi lay a small blue square. ‘My piece is very little,’ Pofi whispered.

Pofi searched for a larger piece, but none felt right. Mum asked, ‘Do you like your little piece?’ Pofi nodded. ‘Then let us think about the story you want it to tell.’ Pofi held the blue square and looked at its soft, bright color.

The blue reminded Pofi of evening beyond the window. Pofi drew a big star on paper. The adults transferred the shape to fabric and did the cutting and sewing. Pofi helped arrange the patches and chose a place for the star in the middle.

The flower fabric went beside the green, with the blue star nearby. Dad noticed a small empty space. Pofi found another little square. ‘This fits right here!’ Pofi said happily. Being small could mean being exactly the piece that was needed.

When the quilt was finished, they sat on the sofa. Pofi touched the star. Dad's patch covered their legs, and Mum's reached their shoulders. The small blue piece was right before Pofi's eyes. No patch was the whole quilt. Together they made something warm.

Mum opened a book. ‘Our own story is in this quilt,’ Pofi said. Everyone explained why they had chosen their patch. It felt as though they had read another story before the book began. What colors and shapes would you choose for your family's pattern?
